Where you sleep shapes your whole Marrakech trip. The romantic medina, the modern new town or a poolside resort each offer a very different stay — here’s how to choose the right area, the riad-vs-hotel question, and what a night really costs. For the full city, see our Marrakech travel guide.
Stay in a riad inside the medina for atmosphere and the souks on your doorstep, or in Gueliz / Hivernage for modern hotels, pools and quieter nights (a short taxi away). The Palmeraie is for resort-style pool days. Budget around 600–1,200 MAD/night for a good riad, and book ahead in spring and autumn.
The medina — riads & atmosphere
The walled old city is where most first-timers stay, in a riad: a traditional house built around a courtyard, often just a handful of rooms, with a rooftop for breakfast and sunset. You’re steps from Jemaa el-Fnaa and the souks. Cars can’t reach most riads, so you’ll walk the final few minutes — arrange a transfer through your riad. Best for: atmosphere, character, first visits.
Gueliz (Ville Nouvelle) — modern & easy
The new town has boulevards, cafés, boutiques and international restaurants, with easy taxis and quieter nights. A 10–15 minute taxi from the medina. Best for: modern hotels, longer stays, travellers who want space and calm.
Hivernage — hotels, pools & nightlife
An upscale strip of larger hotels, pools and nightlife between the medina and Gueliz, walkable to both. Best for: pool days, comfort and a more resort-like feel close to the action.
The Palmeraie — resort escape
A palm-grove district just outside the city with spacious resorts and big pools. You’ll rely on taxis to reach the medina (15–20 minutes). Best for: families and a relaxed, poolside base.
