Sahara Desert Guide: Merzouga, Erg Chebbi & Desert Camps

How to visit the Sahara in Morocco — Merzouga vs Zagora, choosing a desert camp, camel treks, getting there, what to pack, and real prices.

📍 Merzouga ⏱ 9 min read Updated June 8, 2026

A night in the Sahara is, for many people, the highlight of Morocco — silent dunes, a sky thick with stars, and sunrise over the sand. The classic destination is Merzouga, gateway to the towering Erg Chebbi dunes near the Algerian border.

Quick answer

Choose Merzouga / Erg Chebbi over Zagora for the big classic dunes. From Marrakech it's a 3-day / 2-night trip (8–9h each way) via Aït Benhaddou and the gorges. Sleep in a desert camp (≈250–600 MAD pp standard), do the sunset camel trek, and pack a warm layer — desert nights are cold.

If the desert is a priority, do Merzouga and give it the time it needs. The drive itself is spectacular.

Getting there

Most travellers reach Merzouga on a multi-day tour from Marrakech or Fes, because the route is the experience: the Tizi n’Tichka pass, the kasbah of Aït Benhaddou (a UNESCO site and film location), the Dades and Todgha gorges, and palm oases along the way. Independent drivers can do it too — the roads are good — but a tour removes the logistics.

Choosing a desert camp

Camps range from simple to seriously luxurious. What matters:

  • Standard camps — shared or simple tents, communal bathrooms, dinner under the stars, sunrise camel trek. Great value and still magical.
  • Luxury camps — private en-suite tents, rugs, proper beds, sometimes a pool back at the auberge. Worth it for a special occasion.

Either way you’ll usually ride a camel into the dunes at sunset and back at sunrise (4x4 transfers are an option if camels aren’t for you).

What to pack

  • A warm layer (fleece or jacket) — nights are cold even in spring
  • A scarf for sun and blowing sand
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, refillable water
  • Closed shoes for the camp; sandals for the sand
  • A power bank — camps run on generators or solar with limited hours

When to go

October to April for tolerable heat. Avoid June–August, when daytime temperatures can exceed 45°C. Spring brings the best mix of warm days and clear, starry nights.

Frequently asked questions

Merzouga or Zagora for the desert?
Merzouga (the Erg Chebbi dunes) has the tall, classic Sahara dunes and is worth the extra drive. Zagora is closer to Marrakech but its dunes are smaller and less dramatic. If you can spare the time, choose Merzouga.
How many days do you need for the Sahara from Marrakech?
A proper Merzouga trip is 3 days / 2 nights from Marrakech because of the distance (8–9 hours each way, via Aït Benhaddou and the Dades or Todgha gorges). Avoid 2-day Zagora trips if you want the big dunes.
How much does a desert camp cost?
Standard camps run roughly 250–600 MAD per person per night including dinner, breakfast and a camel trek; luxury camps with private bathrooms can be 1,000–3,000+ MAD. Multi-day tours from Marrakech bundle transport, stops and the camp.
When is the best time for the Sahara?
October–April for comfortable temperatures. Summer days are dangerously hot (45°C+). Nights are cold year-round in the desert, so pack a warm layer even in spring.
