Asilah is a whitewashed Atlantic gem ~45 minutes south of Tangier (easy by train). Wander the mural-painted medina, walk the Portuguese ramparts and Bab el-Bahr, relax on the beaches, and time it for the summer arts festival if you can. Lovely as a day trip or overnight.
Getting there
Asilah is wonderfully easy to reach:
- Train — on the main line about 45 minutes south of Tangier; also reachable from Rabat and Casablanca
- Road — a short drive or grand-taxi from Tangier
- As a day trip or overnight — easy in a day, but magical to stay as the day crowds thin and the light turns golden
What to do
- The medina & murals — wander the calm blue-and-white lanes, decorated with vivid murals painted during the town’s famous arts festival.
- The ramparts & Bab el-Bahr — walk the Portuguese sea walls and through the “sea gate” for sweeping Atlantic views.
- The beaches — golden sand right by town, plus the wider Paradise Beach a little to the south.
- Galleries & cafés — Asilah’s artistic streak means galleries, workshops and relaxed café terraces throughout the medina.
- Sunset on the walls — end the day watching the Atlantic light glow against the white ramparts.
When to go
Spring through autumn is ideal — warm, bright and breezy. Summer is liveliest, especially during the arts festival when the medina fills with music and fresh murals; spring and early autumn are quieter and just as beautiful.
