Just 1.5 hours from Marrakech but a world away, Imlil is the gateway to the High Atlas — a Berber village of walnut groves and stone houses at the foot of Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak. From gentle valley walks to the two-day summit climb, it’s Morocco’s mountain heart.
Imlil is the High Atlas trailhead, about 1.5 hours from Marrakech. Enjoy Berber villages and walnut groves, easy day hikes to Aroumd and waterfalls, or climb Mount Toubkal (4,167 m) over two days with a local guide. A refreshing mountain escape year-round.
Getting there & around
Imlil is the easiest High Atlas base from Marrakech:
- From Marrakech — about 1.5 hours by road via Asni (taxi or transfer)
- On foot & by mule — the village and trails are explored walking; local mules carry gear for treks
- Guides — easy to arrange in the village for the Toubkal ascent and longer routes
What to do
- Day hikes from Imlil — walk to the village of Aroumd, seasonal waterfalls and viewpoints through walnut and apple groves.
- Climb Mount Toubkal — the classic two-day trek to North Africa’s 4,167 m summit, overnighting at a mountain refuge.
- Berber village life — terraced fields, stone hamlets and warm mountain hospitality.
- Kasbah du Toubkal viewpoint — mint tea and sweeping valley views from the ridge above Imlil.
- Mule trails & passes — longer routes over the Tizi n’Tamatert and into neighbouring valleys.
When to go
Spring to autumn is ideal for trekking, with the Toubkal summit best from late spring through autumn. Winter blankets the peaks in snow — beautiful for the views, and a proper winter climb with crampons and a guide.
